Think of the response status line as informing the user of the request status. The STATUS CODE is a numerical code used by the receiver to identify the status of a request. It is a three-digit code followed by a text field that provides a textual description of the code for us humans that are number-challenged. While the various network entities will be able to interpret the numeric code, there is no reason as a technician or engineer to memorize these codes, since they are always followed by the REASON PHRASE, which is always in plain English.
